VFTB 095: Mormonism and Christianity

Mormon temple in Salt Lake CityAS OF this writing, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is still considered a leading candidate to win the Republican nomination for president in 2012.  Assuming President Obama runs for reelection, to many conservative Christians this would mean choosing between a socialist and a member of a cult.

Is that fair?  What does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints really believe?  Bill McKeever, founder and president of the Mormonism Research Ministry, explains the fundamental differences between Mormon theology and biblical Christianity — and how his models of Joseph Smith’s golden plates serve as a particularly effective witnessing tool.

  1. Thanks! Bill and Derek.

Mormonism looks like the 1800’s version of what we saw in the David Koresh cult.

After so many masons have been elected president, I’m not at all surprised that they’d want to cycle through a mormon then a full muslim and another catholic before a multi-faith president.

Of course, Obama was a fairly blatant prototype of a multi-faith president (via black muslim which has jehovah’s witness ties and liberal christian).

    Tony Blair is another example.

There may be no choice in an unrepentant US…
Acts 7:42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets. (cp. Romans 1)

  2. Bro Derek and Bill,

I really enjoyed this episode, even though Derek’s voice sounded odd to me. Like it was extra clear. HD Microphones?

Anyways, it was perfect timing. I was about to blog about Mormonism (about whether or not Mormons are actually Christians) and wanted to hurry to get it out, but I kept getting delayed and feeling lazy. After listening to this, I may need to rethink my strategy. On one hand, I want to show Christians that no, they’re not, but after hearing this I also want to make sure that stray mormons coming across it aren’t offended. Again thank you for leading me to think lovingly about Mormons.

I also loved Bill’s point on the gold tablets. That’s classic, and I’ve never thought about it.

Later, keep up the good work!

  3. Excellent interview! I loved the “plate theory” put forth, that BYU professors have been trying for some time to lighten those solid gold plats in order to explain how anyone could run with 200 pounds under their arm. Just the kind of detail that exposes the flimflam man known as Smith. They say the devil is in the details, and this one is certainly devilish (a lie).
