DING, DONG, Osama’s dead! But is that something we should celebrate?
As Judge Andrew Napolitano commented on Fox News this week, the assassination of Osama Bin Laden violates four international treaties, three federal statutes, and the Constitution of the United States. The fact that Osama’s death is popular with Americans means that it’s likely to be used as precedent for future targeted killings against people deemed a threat by this or some future president.
Given that the Executive Branch of the U.S. government now claims the right to assassinate American citizens without due process, we should all be disturbed this development.
Further, it appears, if these articles at Newsflavor.com are indeed from an anonymous Democrat inside the White House and accurate as reported (read here and then here), that the decision to kill Osama was made without the knowledge of and, ultimately, over the objections of Barack Obama.
In other words, the assassination of Osama Bin Laden was the result of a military-intelligence coup inside the White House.
Finally, as Christians, where do we draw the line at righteous retribution? When the Lord said, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,” how exactly do we put that into practice? Were the events of last weekend justice or murder?

This is a bit long. Mea culpa. No worse than listening to podcasters read long articles to be sure.
1. Romans 13 is the license for the authorities to be “a terror to the wicked.”…if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he bares not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil.”
2. Revelation 18 is the warrant for taking joy in the destruction of the wicked. “20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God has avenged you on her.” It is pure joy when the enemy can no longer violate and kill. Here’s more:
Proverbs 21 “15 It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.”
Proverns 28 “17 A man that does violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the pit; let no man stay him.”
I’ve worked Seal Team 2 support including during the Libya bombings back in the mid-80’s. I’ve also been involved in prison chaplaincy and currently work in public safety and law enforcement. I’ve also been stationed at Guantanamo Bay. So you know my prejudices.
a. Close Gitmo and drop the Cuba embargo. I believe the only reason both exist is because of standing threats in Cuba against the lives of the presidents and their families due to CIA assassination attempts.
b. Terrorists are not civilians. The problem with terrorism is that it crosses the boundary between military defense and policing. That’s why unconventional warfare forces are used to counter them.
James 2 “13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that has shown no mercy; and mercy rejoices against judgment.”
This applies just as much to terrorists as the authorities.
c. If President Obama has committed “high crimes” per Judge Napolitano, he should be prosecuted and impeached.
In any case, President Obama claimed responsibility for assassination. So he’s now made himself the target for assassination.
Galatians 6 “7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap.”
It’s more likely that Mr. Obama has subjected himself to reprisal that will keep him and his family locked up in their own houses from now on. He doesn’t enjoy that isolation. That’s the reason he’s given for playing so much golf. So there’s a price to pay for torture and murder.
The same goes for legalized murder through abortion by the millions. And tax theft by the trillions. And unjust wars as Saudi mercenaries. Obama can escape his doom the same way any of us have — through the salvation of Jesus Christ. Apart from Christ there is no sanctuary.
Obama is no doubt a figurehead for many things, but his clear and determined advocacy for legalized murder through abortion makes him much more a tool of the enemy than Osama could ever be.
When the wicked fall into the hands of unjust and cruel authorities in prison or from police or the military there’s a very hard lesson for them — in ironic justice. Outlaws that cry for justice are a joke. They often find a new set of rules and taxes exacted by the local gang leaders or warlords. And our prison officers largely look the other way.
For those that execute the ministry of vengeance with Christ, “who has taught their hands to war,” as with King David — when they do so honorably with mercy — then we should celebrate them. A quick death at the hands of Seal Team 6 is definitely mercy.
The military is held to much harsher standards, such as the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice). (… though a weak CINC dilutes them, but I’ll spare you) It can be done right.
Psalm 144
1 Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
2 My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
3 LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.
5 Bow thy heavens, O LORD, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.
6 Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.
7 Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children;
8 Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
9 I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.
10 It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.
11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:
12 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:
13 That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:
14 That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets.
15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.
Grow up Church! Almighty God has a ministry that for the most part He does not share with you (except for the elders). And He executes it sometimes through animals, at others through angels, certainly through agencies like armies and nations, not in the least also through the elements, and sometimes He does so Himself.
And in His wisdom and patience and mercy and love, He has also established that evil carries the seeds of its own destruction.
Which of you will judge Him?
And whether or not Almighty God as Lord used the righteous — or the wicked — as the instrument of justice, do any of you doubt that Osama Bin Laden has been judged for the deaths of innocents? It’s good that he can do no more violence.
How much more then will Barack Hussein Obama reap a similar fate?
